India Seeks Safe Hormuz Passage
India is considering diplomatic options, including talks with Iran, to secure safe passage for at least nine laden tankers waiting in the Persian Gulf amid renewed attacks near the Strait of Hormuz.
India Seeks Safe Hormuz Passage
The vessels are carrying crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas, making their safe movement important for India’s energy supply chain.
Officials are closely monitoring the tankers as maritime security risks rise in the region. The government is expected to engage Iranian authorities over the safety of Indian seafarers and vessels operating near the Hormuz route.
The concern has grown after renewed vessel attacks weakened an already fragile interim understanding between the US and Iran.
Indian Tankers Face Gulf Risk
At least 198 mariners are said to be onboard the nine tankers waiting to transit through the strategic waterway. Hundreds of Indian seafarers have also reportedly remained stranded for months since movement through Hormuz became severely restricted.
India is particularly concerned about crew safety after Indian seafarers were killed during earlier strikes on commercial ships in the Gulf of Oman.
Despite the risks, some vessels have continued to attempt transit through the strait. However, heightened security concerns have led some ship operators to delay movement or change course.
Hormuz Route Critical For India
The Strait of Hormuz is vital for India’s energy imports. Before the latest conflict, a large share of India’s crude oil, LNG and LPG shipments passed through this route.
Reduced movement through the strait can affect fuel supply planning, shipping costs, insurance rates and energy market stability.
India has so far avoided a direct political position in the escalation, but the safety of vessels and Indian crew members has become a key operational concern for the government.
