Zelenskyy Seeks Anti-Ballistic Systems From US
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked US President Donald Trump and American senators for additional anti-ballistic missile systems and interceptors. Kyiv says its existing defences can counter many combat drones but remain insufficient against ballistic missile attacks.
Zelenskyy Seeks Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems
Zelenskyy raised Ukraine’s defence requirements during his visit to Washington, where he met Trump and held discussions with members of the US Senate.
Speaking after a meeting at the US Capitol, the Ukrainian leader said anti-ballistic systems and interceptor missiles remained Kyiv’s most urgent military requirement. He conveyed details of the equipment needed to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The United States did not immediately announce any new weapons package following the discussions.
Ukraine Seeks Stronger Missile Defences
Zelenskyy said Ukraine had developed and deployed drones capable of destroying Iranian- and Russian-manufactured attack drones. However, he acknowledged that ballistic missiles presented a more difficult threat.
Ballistic missiles travel at high speeds and require specialised air-defence systems and interceptors. Ukraine has repeatedly sought additional Patriot systems and missiles as Russia intensifies aerial attacks against urban centres, energy facilities and military targets.
Kyiv has also discussed obtaining licences to manufacture Patriot interceptors domestically, although establishing production could take considerable time.
Washington Visit Focuses on Ukraine Support
Zelenskyy’s visit came as the US Senate advanced legislation seeking stronger economic pressure on Russia and countries purchasing Russian energy.
Ukraine welcomed the proposed sanctions while continuing to press Washington for additional military assistance. Zelenskyy has argued that stronger air defences are essential for protecting civilians and maintaining Ukraine’s ability to resist Russian attacks.
