IAEA Flags Sharp Rise In Yongbyon Nuclear Activity

North Korea’s nuclear activity at the Yongbyon complex has sharply increased, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, reviving concerns over the pace of Pyongyang’s weapons programme. The warning comes as the UN watchdog says signs of expanded uranium enrichment and continued reactor-related activity suggest a significant rise in the country’s ability to produce nuclear material.

IAEA Flags Sharp Rise In Yongbyon Activity

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said there has been a “very serious increase” in North Korea’s nuclear weapons production capacity, with particular concern focused on activity at Yongbyon, the country’s main nuclear complex. The agency has pointed to increased uranium enrichment and continuing operations linked to the 5MW reactor and related facilities, indicating that Pyongyang’s nuclear programme is expanding rather than slowing.

North Korea Nuclear Capacity Raises Fresh Alarm

The latest assessment has added to international concern that North Korea may be building greater capacity to produce fissile material for additional nuclear warheads. Current reporting suggests a broader expansion of enrichment infrastructure, including possible work at another enrichment-related site. That could help North Korea raise its stockpile further in the coming years.

Diplomatic Stalemate Deepens Security Concerns

The warning comes amid stalled diplomacy and continued sanctions-related concerns around Pyongyang. The IAEA has no inspectors inside North Korea and is forced to rely on remote monitoring and satellite imagery, limiting direct verification. The agency has said it remains ready to return if political conditions allow, but for now the developments at Yongbyon are likely to deepen security concerns across East Asia and beyond.
