Ethanol Petrol Gets Excise Duty Waiver
The Centre has exempted higher ethanol-blended petrol from central excise duty, covering petrol blends containing 22 percent to 30 percent ethanol as part of India’s push to promote cleaner fuel and reduce crude oil import dependence.
Higher Ethanol Blended Petrol Exempted
The exemption applies to petrol blends with ethanol content between 22 percent and 30 percent. These include E22, E25, E27 and E30 fuel blends, where ethanol is mixed with motor spirit in different proportions.
According to the government notification, E22 contains 22 percent ethanol and 78 percent motor spirit. E25 contains 25 percent ethanol, E27 contains 27 percent ethanol, and E30 contains 30 percent ethanol by volume.
Central Excise Duty Waiver On Petrol
The central excise duty exemption is aimed at encouraging greater use of ethanol-blended petrol. The move is expected to support India’s ethanol blending programme and help oil marketing companies gradually expand the availability of higher ethanol fuel blends.
The policy also aligns with India’s broader energy strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil. Ethanol blending helps lower the requirement for fossil fuel-based petrol while supporting domestic biofuel production.
Ethanol Blending Push In India
India has been increasing ethanol blending in petrol to improve energy security and reduce emissions. Higher ethanol blends can also support demand for ethanol produced from sugarcane, grains and other agricultural sources.
The exemption may encourage wider adoption of higher ethanol fuels, though its impact on retail petrol prices will depend on pricing decisions by oil companies and the availability of compatible vehicles and fuel infrastructure.
