HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Step Down
HDFC Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan will step down when his current term ends on October 26, 2026, after deciding not to seek reappointment. The move begins a major leadership transition at India’s largest private-sector lender.
Sashidhar Jagdishan to Leave HDFC Bank in October
Jagdishan had been widely expected to seek another term but informed the bank that he did not wish to be considered for reappointment.
He has spent nearly three decades at HDFC Bank, joining in 1996 as a manager in the finance function before rising through senior leadership positions. He became MD and CEO in October 2020, succeeding longtime chief executive Aditya Puri.
During his tenure, Jagdishan oversaw the landmark merger of HDFC Ltd with HDFC Bank in 2023.
HDFC Bank Accelerates Search for New CEO
The bank’s board is now accelerating the process of identifying Jagdishan’s successor ahead of his October departure.
The selection will be closely watched because HDFC Bank is one of India’s largest financial institutions and a major constituent of the benchmark stock indices.
Market speculation is expected to focus on whether the bank promotes an internal candidate or appoints an external executive to lead its next phase of growth.
Leadership Change Comes Amid Governance Scrutiny
Jagdishan’s departure comes during a challenging period for HDFC Bank, with its shares under pressure amid governance concerns and a recently filed US securities class-action lawsuit.
The bank has rejected allegations made in the lawsuit and said it will vigorously defend itself.
Despite the leadership and legal uncertainty, HDFC Bank remains financially strong, with its latest standalone quarterly net profit rising about 5% year-on-year and its gross non-performing asset ratio remaining relatively low.
