Nitin Nabin Reprimands MPs Over Sajjan Kumar Visit
BJP national president Nitin Nabin has reprimanded three Delhi MPs after they visited the family of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences following his death. Kumar was serving two concurrent life sentences in cases connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Nitin Nabin Pulls Up Three Delhi BJP MPs
The three MPs — Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Yogender Chandolia — were reportedly summoned by Nabin, who expressed displeasure over their decision to visit Kumar’s residence.
The BJP subsequently clarified that the lawmakers had visited the family in their personal capacities and were not representing the party.
Sehrawat represents West Delhi, Bidhuri represents South Delhi and Chandolia is the MP from North West Delhi. Their constituencies include areas that were previously part of the Outer Delhi parliamentary seat represented by Kumar.
HS Phoolka Criticises Sajjan Kumar Condolence Visit
BJP leader and senior advocate H.S. Phoolka strongly criticised the MPs’ visit. Phoolka has represented victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in legal proceedings and joined the BJP earlier this year.
He argued that political representatives should reserve their sympathy for victims and their families, particularly given the BJP’s longstanding support for efforts to prosecute those responsible for the violence.
Sajjan Kumar Was Serving Two Life Sentences
Kumar died on August 20 at the age of 80 while serving two concurrent life sentences.
He had been convicted in separate cases relating to killings during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, including the murders of two Sikh men in the Raj Nagar area.
The MPs’ condolence visit has triggered criticism within and outside the BJP, bringing renewed attention to the politically sensitive legacy of the 1984 violence.
