Elon Musk Accuses OpenAI Of Unsafe AI Push

Elon Musk has accused OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman of abandoning the company’s original nonprofit mission, as a major legal battle over the future of the artificial intelligence firm continues in a US court.

Elon Musk OpenAI Lawsuit

Musk told the court that OpenAI was created to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of society, with safety and openness as its central goals. He alleged that the company later moved toward a profit-focused structure, going against the purpose for which it was originally formed.

The dispute centres on whether OpenAI violated commitments linked to its founding mission or whether its shift toward commercial investment was necessary to fund expensive AI development.

OpenAI Nonprofit Mission Dispute

Musk claimed he supported OpenAI in its early years because he believed artificial intelligence needed to be developed safely and transparently. He said he did not want to fund an organisation meant to build safe AI only to see it later create unsafe systems.

OpenAI has denied wrongdoing and argued that its nonprofit arm remains in control of the organisation. The company’s legal team has said outside investment became necessary because of the high cost of advanced AI research and infrastructure.

Sam Altman And OpenAI Trial

Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 along with other technology leaders. Musk later left the organisation in 2018. OpenAI created a commercial subsidiary in 2019 and later received major investment from Microsoft.

The case could have wider implications for the AI industry, especially around nonprofit governance, commercial partnerships and the control of powerful AI systems. The court is expected to decide whether OpenAI breached its original commitments or legally evolved its business model to compete in the fast-growing AI sector.
