EAM Jaishankar Warns of ‘Very Firm Response’ to Any Pakistani Attack

As tensions continue to simmer in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has issued a strong and unequivocal warning against any military aggression by Pakistan. Emphasizing India’s restrained approach so far, he made it clear that any escalation from the Pakistani side would invite a swift and decisive retaliation.

“Our response was targeted and measured. It is not our intention to escalate the situation. However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very very firm response,” Jaishankar stated during a diplomatic briefing.

His message comes at a time when India is actively engaging with key international partners and neighbouring nations to convey the rationale behind its recent military actions. Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, involved precision strikes on terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Emphasis on Diplomacy, But With Red Lines

While reiterating India’s preference for peace and stability in the region, Jaishankar also made it clear that India’s patience should not be misread as weakness. “As a neighbour and close partner, it is important that you have a good understanding of the situation,” he told attending diplomats, signaling that India expects regional players to understand its security imperatives.

India has consistently maintained that its operations have been against terrorist elements and not aimed at civilian populations or state structures. The calculated nature of the strikes, coupled with diplomatic outreach, suggests that New Delhi is attempting to balance hard power with international diplomacy.

Reinforcing Deterrence

The External Affairs Minister’s remarks serve not only as a message to Pakistan but also as a signal to global observers that India will not tolerate further provocation. The emphasis on a “measured” yet “firm” response underlines the government’s strategy of maintaining military readiness while leaving the door open for diplomatic resolution—provided Pakistan refrains from further escalation.

As border skirmishes continue and civilians remain under evacuation in vulnerable regions, Jaishankar’s comments have added to the Indian government’s broader narrative of strategic restraint backed by resolute defence.
