PM Modi Pushes AI-Based Water Data Governance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the use of Artificial Intelligence to strengthen India’s water data governance, arguing that better collection, integration and analysis of water-sector information can improve planning and help the country respond more effectively to growing water security challenges.
Modi Calls for AI in Water Data Management
Chairing the valedictory session of the two-day National Departmental Summit on Water, Modi said water-related data should be brought together, systematically managed and effectively utilised.
He recommended using AI for data collection and analysis through a uniform framework, allowing governments to make more informed decisions on water availability, demand and infrastructure.
The summit was organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and brought together ministers and senior officials from the Centre, states and Union Territories.
Treated Water Use and Conservation Prioritised
Modi also called for anticipatory and integrated planning to address water scarcity, including greater use of treated wastewater for agriculture and industrial purposes.
He stressed the need to adopt water-saving technologies and learn from international best practices that could be adapted for Indian conditions.
Urban Local Bodies should also prepare for future water requirements arising from population growth and rapid urbanisation, he said.
Modi Proposes Jal Utsav to Boost Participation
The Prime Minister proposed promoting a “Jal Utsav” to increase public participation and awareness around water conservation.
He also called for regular desilting programmes, stronger dam-safety preparedness and structured interstate study visits involving elected representatives, officials and farmers.
The summit identified four major priorities: faster completion of water infrastructure projects, sustained public participation in conservation, long-term sustainability of drinking-water sources and improved operation and maintenance of rural drinking-water schemes.
