Delhi High Court To Protect Tharoor’s Rights
The Delhi High Court has said it will pass an interim order protecting the personality rights of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in a case linked to alleged deepfake videos circulating online. The court issued notice on his plea and indicated that relief would be granted against the alleged misuse of his name, image, voice and identity.
Shashi Tharoor Seeks Personality Rights Protection
Tharoor approached the court seeking protection against what he described as a malicious digital campaign using artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. His plea said fabricated videos had cloned his face, voice, vocabulary and mannerisms to create misleading content.
Delhi High Court Issues Notice
Justice Mini Pushkarna issued notice on the interim injunction application and the main suit. The court indicated that it would pass an order covering key prayers sought by Tharoor, including protection against unknown defendants allegedly circulating the content.
Deepfake Videos Target Public Figure
Tharoor’s counsel argued that fake videos were attributing politically sensitive statements to him and damaging his reputation. The court was told that although some links had been taken down, the same content kept reappearing through different URLs.
Social Media Platforms Asked To Act
The plea also sought directions to social media platforms, including Meta and X, to remove infringing deepfake content. Meta informed the court that identified Instagram links had become inaccessible, while the court noted that Tharoor could approach it again if similar links resurfaced.
