CBSE Rule Puts Puducherry French Classes At Risk
A new CBSE language framework has raised concern in Puducherry, where French has long been part of the Union Territory’s school and cultural identity. The change is linked to the implementation of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023.
CBSE Language Rule In Puducherry
CBSE has directed schools to follow the new three-language structure from Class 6. Under the framework, students must study three languages, including two Indian languages and one other language.
Since English is already the medium of instruction in most CBSE schools in Puducherry, students will now have to choose two Indian languages. This effectively leaves little room for French as a regular language option in many schools.
French Language In Puducherry Schools
French has special historical importance in Puducherry because the region was a former French colony and still maintains cultural, educational and administrative links with France. For many families, French is not just a foreign language but part of the region’s identity.
Several schools are expected to offer Tamil and Hindi as second and third language options from the current academic cycle. The shift has created concern among parents, teachers and language groups who fear that French learning may decline sharply in CBSE schools.
NCFSE 2023 And Three-Language Policy
The change follows the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, which aligns school education with the National Education Policy. The focus is on promoting Indian languages while retaining flexibility for schools.
However, in Puducherry, the policy has sparked debate because of the Union Territory’s unique linguistic history. Stakeholders are likely to seek clarity on whether French can continue as an additional or optional subject without affecting compliance with CBSE rules.
