India To Receive Fourth S-400 Unit From Russia

India is expected to receive the fourth unit of the Russian-made S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system in early May, a move that will further strengthen the Indian Air Force’s long-range air defence capability.

India S-400 Missile System Delivery

The fourth S-400 unit has already been shipped from Russia and is expected to arrive in India in the next few days. India had signed a deal worth about $5 billion with Russia in 2018 for five S-400 systems.

Three units have already been delivered and deployed. The fifth and final unit under the original contract is expected to be delivered by November 2026 under the updated delivery schedule.

S-400 Boost For Indian Air Defence

The S-400 Triumf is a long-range air defence system designed to detect, track and engage aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missile threats. Its induction has significantly upgraded India’s air defence network, especially along sensitive borders.

The system reportedly played an important role during Operation Sindoor, helping strengthen India’s layered air defence against aerial threats. The arrival of the fourth unit is expected to expand coverage and improve operational readiness.

India-Russia Defence Deal Expands

India has also cleared the procurement of an additional five S-400 systems from Russia, which will take the total planned strength to 10 units. The follow-on order is being treated as part of the continuing defence partnership between New Delhi and Moscow.

The original S-400 deal had drawn concerns from the United States under its CAATSA sanctions framework. However, India has continued with the acquisition, citing national security requirements and the need to strengthen its air defence capabilities.
