Basement Repairs Linked to Satya Niketan Collapse
Six people have died and six others were injured after a five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, with preliminary findings pointing to basement water accumulation and ongoing repair work as possible triggers for the structural failure.
Basement Repairs Under Scrutiny After Delhi Collapse
The roughly 50-year-old building, which was being used as paying guest accommodation, collapsed on Sunday while renovation work was reportedly underway.
Preliminary information indicates that a pillar in the basement may have become unstable during the repairs, weakening the structure before the building came down. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said water had accumulated in the basement and that repair work on the ageing building appeared to have contributed to the collapse.
Authorities have stressed that the exact sequence of events remains under investigation.
Six Dead in Satya Niketan Building Collapse
By Monday, rescue teams had recovered 12 people from the debris. Six were confirmed dead, while the remaining six were reported to be in stable condition.
Around 80% of the debris had been cleared, with work continuing in the basement area. An adjoining building, also estimated to be 40 to 50 years old, was evacuated because of concerns over its stability.
FIR Ordered Against Building Owner
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Satya Niketan collapse and directed that an FIR be registered against the building owner. Police have booked the alleged owner and others while investigating whether unauthorised renovation work contributed to the disaster.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also ordered action against unsafe and illegal structures, including immediate sealing of certain buildings exceeding four floors.
Gupta said officials found responsible for negligence would also face action, while structural audits of dangerous buildings and inspections of nearby paying guest accommodations have been ordered.
