US Vice President J.D. Vance Defends Comments on Wife’s Faith

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance responded on October 31 2025 to criticism over recent remarks regarding his wife, Usha Vance, and her religious background. At a publicly-attended event hosted by Turning Point USA, Vance had said that his wife, who was raised in a Hindu family, often accompanies him to church and that he “honestly do[s] wish” she might one day embrace his Christian faith. He also noted that their children are being raised in the Christian tradition.

Clarification on Religious Beliefs

In a follow-up post on the social network X, Vance clarified that Usha Vance “is not a Christian and has no plans to convert.” He rejected suggestions that his earlier remarks had disrespected her beliefs, calling the backlash “disgusting” and asserting that there is no conflict within their inter-faith marriage. He added that the free will of each individual is central to his understanding of faith.

Public Reaction and Debate

The comments sparked debate in both American and Indian-American circles, with critics arguing that the vice-president’s phrasing diminished Usha Vance’s Hindu heritage. Advocates for Hindu-American engagement described his language as insensitive and reflective of broader issues around religious identity and public politics. Vance defended his words by emphasising that discussing religious matters is part of being a public figure rather than a private individual.
