US Lawmakers Push Ukraine Aid Bill
US lawmakers have advanced a new Ukraine support bill that would provide fresh military assistance to Kyiv and tighten sanctions on Russia, despite resistance from President Donald Trump’s allies in Congress.
US House Advances Ukraine Support Act
The US House of Representatives voted to move forward with the Ukraine Support Act, clearing the way for a final vote on the legislation.
The bill includes military financing loans for Ukraine, extends the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and provides support for replenishing US defence stockpiles. It also seeks to maintain Washington’s backing for Kyiv as the war with Russia continues.
Russia Sanctions Target Key Sectors
The proposed legislation would impose tougher sanctions on Russia’s banking, energy, mining and defence sectors. It also aims to strengthen restrictions on entities helping Moscow evade existing sanctions.
Supporters of the bill said stronger sanctions are needed to increase pressure on Russia and limit its ability to finance the war in Ukraine.
Trump Administration Faces Ukraine Policy Pressure
The vote reflects growing pressure on the Trump administration over its Ukraine policy. Some lawmakers argue that reducing support for Kyiv could weaken US credibility and embolden Russia.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Russia had failed to achieve its original war aims, but added that the conflict still requires a negotiated settlement. The bill’s final passage remains uncertain because of divisions among Republicans and possible resistance in the Senate.
