Germany Loses UN Security Council Bid

Germany has failed to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the first time, losing out to Austria and Portugal in a closely watched vote at the UN General Assembly.

Germany Loses UN Security Council Seat Vote

Germany secured 104 votes in the election, falling short of the two-thirds majority required to win a seat. Austria received 131 votes, while Portugal secured 134 votes, allowing both countries to take the two available seats from the Western European and Others Group.

The elected members will begin their two-year terms on January 1, 2027.

Austria And Portugal Win UNSC Seats

The result is being seen as a diplomatic setback for Berlin, which had campaigned for the Security Council seat as part of its wider push for a stronger global role.

Germany is one of the largest contributors to the United Nations and has frequently argued for a more prominent role in global security decision-making. However, the vote showed that financial contribution and diplomatic weight did not automatically translate into support from member states.

Germany’s Israel Stand Under Scrutiny

Germany’s strong support for Israel, along with its firm position on Ukraine, is being discussed as one possible reason behind the loss. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia had actively worked against Germany’s candidacy, while also acknowledging that Berlin’s position on Israel may have cost it support.

The result has triggered political debate inside Germany over its foreign policy approach, its outreach to the Global South and its ability to build wider diplomatic consensus.
