Saudi Issues Security Alerts in Mecca, Jeddah
Saudi Arabia briefly activated emergency security alerts across Mecca, Jeddah, Taif and several other locations after a week of intensified missile and drone attacks linked to Yemen’s Houthi movement. Authorities later lifted the warnings after determining that the immediate danger had passed.
Saudi Arabia Issues Alerts in Mecca and Jeddah
Saudi Civil Defence warned residents in affected areas of a potential security threat, temporarily activating emergency systems across parts of the kingdom.
The alert in Mecca was particularly significant because of the city’s religious importance and the sensitivity surrounding any potential security threat near Islam’s holiest sites.
The warnings followed several days of attacks against Saudi territory and infrastructure. Authorities later said the danger had passed in multiple cities, including Jeddah, Taif, Yanbu, Abha, Jazan and AlUla.
Houthi Drone Intercepted Near Mecca
Saudi forces said they intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it could enter restricted airspace around the holy city.
Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki said the security of Mecca and its holy sites remained a red line.
The Houthis have denied deliberately targeting Mecca or religious sites while claiming responsibility for several recent attacks elsewhere in Saudi Arabia.
Houthi Attacks Heighten Saudi Security Concerns
The escalation has increased pressure on Saudi air defences as Houthi forces continue targeting cities and critical infrastructure.
Recent attacks have also raised concerns about Saudi energy facilities and Red Sea export routes, adding to wider regional fears over shipping security and oil supply disruptions.
The brief security alerts underline the growing strain on Saudi Arabia as the regional conflict continues to widen.
