US-Iran Deal Has Makings, Says Bessent
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington and Tehran may have the “makings of a deal” to wind down the conflict, though he made it clear that any agreement would depend on President Donald Trump’s final approval.
Bessent Says US-Iran Talks Show Progress
Bessent said the Trump administration had achieved what previous administrations could not by bringing Iran to the table for discussions on its nuclear programme. He said Iran may now be willing to commit to not having a nuclear weapon.
His remarks came as talks continued over a possible framework to reduce military tensions, reopen secure shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and begin a wider diplomatic process on Iran’s nuclear activities.
Trump Yet To Approve Iran Deal
Bessent stressed that the proposed arrangement was not final and that everything would depend on Trump’s decision. He said Trump would not accept a bad deal, indicating that Washington would demand firm commitments from Tehran before approving any agreement.
The discussions are taking place after weeks of military escalation, economic pressure and disruption fears in the Gulf region. The US has also maintained sanctions pressure on Iran while talks continue.
Iran Nuclear Talks Remain Fragile
The possible deal is expected to focus on de-escalation, nuclear commitments and regional security concerns. However, major sticking points remain, including sanctions relief, frozen Iranian assets and the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Bessent said US economic pressure had helped bring Iran to the negotiating table, but the final shape of any agreement remains uncertain.
