Blue Origin Rocket Explodes During Test

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket exploded on a Florida launchpad during a hot-fire test, marking a major setback for Jeff Bezos’s space company as it works to compete with SpaceX in the heavy-lift rocket market.

Blue Origin New Glenn Test Fails

The explosion occurred during a hot-fire test, in which rocket engines are ignited while the vehicle remains secured to the launchpad. Blue Origin described the incident as an “anomaly” and said all personnel were safe.

Video footage showed the rocket briefly igniting before erupting into a large fireball at Cape Canaveral. The company said it would investigate the cause and use the findings to improve future operations.

Amazon Satellite Launch Faces Delay

The New Glenn rocket was being prepared for its fourth launch, which was expected to carry 48 Amazon Leo satellites into low-Earth orbit. The satellites had not yet been integrated with the rocket, preventing damage to the payload.

The incident is likely to delay Blue Origin’s launch schedule and affect its efforts to support Amazon’s satellite internet plans. The New Glenn programme is also important for Blue Origin’s wider commercial, defence and lunar ambitions.

Blue Origin Faces SpaceX Competition

The setback comes as Blue Origin tries to close the gap with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which dominates the commercial launch market. New Glenn is designed as a reusable heavy-lift rocket capable of carrying large payloads into orbit.

Jeff Bezos said it was a difficult day but added that the company would rebuild. Spaceflight officials said such failures remain part of rocket development, though the incident will bring closer scrutiny of Blue Origin’s testing and launch timelines.
