Udhayanidhi Clarifies Sanatana Remarks
DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has clarified his remarks on Sanatana Dharma after his comments in the Assembly triggered a fresh political controversy.
Udhayanidhi Stalin Clarifies Sanatana Stand
Udhayanidhi said his comments were directed at what he described as social practices that divide people, and not at any individual’s personal faith. His clarification came after criticism from political opponents and Hindu organisations over his renewed statement that Sanatana Dharma should be abolished.
The DMK leader had made the remarks during his speech in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where he repeated his earlier position that systems promoting social divisions should be opposed.
Sanatana Remarks Trigger Political Row
The statement revived a debate that first began in 2023, when Udhayanidhi’s comments on Sanatana Dharma drew sharp reactions across the country. Several groups accused him of hurting religious sentiments, while the DMK maintained that the remarks were part of its ideological opposition to caste-based discrimination.
The latest clarification appears aimed at separating the DMK’s political argument from a direct attack on religious belief. However, the issue continues to remain politically sensitive in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speech Draws Attention
During the same Assembly speech, Udhayanidhi also raised concerns over the position given to Tamil Thai Vazhthu at a recent government ceremony. He said the Tamil invocation song must be accorded proper respect at official events in the State.
He also described the Opposition’s role as constructive and said it would hold the government accountable while protecting Tamil Nadu’s rights and traditions.
