Amit Shah Says UCC in 21 NDA States Before 2029
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said all 21 states governed by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance will introduce the Uniform Civil Code before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, setting a clear timeline for one of the BJP’s longstanding policy commitments.
Amit Shah Sets 2029 Deadline for UCC
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Shah expressed confidence that the Uniform Civil Code would be introduced across all 21 BJP-NDA ruled states before the next general election.
The UCC seeks to establish a common framework of personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing religion-specific provisions in these areas.
Implementation would require legislation by individual state governments, with proposals passing through their respective legislative processes.
Shah Links UCC Push to Equal Rights
Shah connected the UCC initiative with the government’s broader argument for equality before the law.
He cited the abolition of triple talaq, saying the move had strengthened equal rights for Muslim women, and described the expansion of the UCC as a continuation of that approach.
The BJP included implementation of a Uniform Civil Code among its commitments in its 2024 Lok Sabha election manifesto.
States Move Ahead With Uniform Civil Code
Uttarakhand has already implemented a Uniform Civil Code, becoming the first state after Independence to introduce such a framework.
Other BJP-led governments have also examined or initiated steps towards UCC legislation, although implementation timelines and provisions may differ between states.
Shah’s announcement indicates that the BJP-led alliance intends to accelerate these state-level efforts over the next three years, potentially making the UCC a major political and legislative issue ahead of the 2029 general election.
