Economist Jeffrey Sachs Says India Could Become World’s Largest Economy

Economist Jeffrey Sachs has predicted that India could become the world’s largest economy at some point this century, arguing that stronger cooperation between New Delhi and Beijing could accelerate growth and help establish a more multipolar global order.

Sachs Sees India and China as Top Global Economies

Sachs said India and China could emerge as the world’s two largest economies within the next quarter century, with the United States moving to third place.

He pointed to India’s faster population growth relative to China and its strong economic expansion as factors supporting its long-term rise.

Sachs said India is currently growing faster than other major economies and argued that deeper investment and technology partnerships could further strengthen its trajectory.

India-China Cooperation Could Reshape Global Economy

Sachs described the India-China relationship as one of the most consequential bilateral relationships in the world.

He said improved ties could unlock greater trade, investment, technology partnerships and stronger supply chains between the two Asian powers.

While acknowledging continuing border tensions and strategic differences, Sachs argued that China also has an interest in India succeeding economically because cooperation between the two countries could reinforce a multipolar international system.

Economic Centre of Gravity Shifting Back to Asia

Sachs said the centre of the global economy was moving back towards Asia after centuries of Western economic dominance.

He identified the United States, China, India and Russia as major global powers and argued that multipolarity was already becoming an established feature of international relations.

His comments come as BRICS members increasingly push for reforms to global financial and political institutions and greater representation for emerging economies.
