Two Soldiers, Two Porters Injured in Militant Attack in J&K’s Baramulla
In a militant attack on Thursday in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, two Army personnel and two porters sustained injuries during a firefight.
The attack took place near the Nagin post in the Butapathri Sector, close to the Line of Control (LoC) and the tourist destination of Gulmarg. The incident is part of a recent escalation in militant activities in the region.
According to officials, militants opened fire on an Army convoy passing through the area, triggering a firefight. A Srinagar-based spokesperson of the Army’s 15 Corps confirmed, “During the firefight, two soldiers and two porters suffered injuries and were evacuated for medical care. The operation against militants is ongoing.” Security forces rushed reinforcements to the area and established a multi-layered cordon in an effort to trap the attackers.
Separate Incident in Pulwama
In a separate incident in Pulwama, a non-local worker, Shubham Kumar, 19, from Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor, was shot by suspected militants in Batagund village, sustaining a bullet injury in his hand. Kumar was rushed to the hospital, where his condition was reported as stable. Security forces cordoned off the area but were unable to locate the attackers. Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the attack on unarmed civilians, calling it “un-Islamic.”
Rising Militancy and Security Challenges in Kashmir
This attack is part of a growing wave of violence in Kashmir, with three recent attacks targeting non-locals. The region has seen eight civilians killed in two separate attacks in the past week, posing a significant security challenge. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level meeting at the Unified Headquarters on Thursday to review security strategies and prevent further incidents. Northern Army commander Lieutenant-General M.V. Suchindra Kumar also conducted a separate security review, urging forces to stay vigilant.
