Two Killed in Zamboanga School Shooting
Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school attached to Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City, southern Philippines, on Tuesday. Authorities said the suspected gunman, a Grade 9 student, shot another student before taking his own life.
Zamboanga School Shooting Leaves Two Dead
The shooting occurred on the junior high school campus on August 18. Preliminary police information indicated that the student entered the campus carrying firearms before opening fire inside a classroom.
The victim was identified as a male student studying one grade above the suspected shooter. The gunman later died by suicide.
Police and emergency personnel were deployed to the campus immediately after the incident as students and staff were moved to safety.
Ateneo de Zamboanga Campus Secured
Hundreds of students were evacuated while security forces secured the school premises.
University authorities later confirmed that there was no continuing active threat and that the situation had been brought under control.
Investigators are examining how the firearms were brought onto the campus and what circumstances may have led to the shooting. The motive has not yet been officially established.
