Trump Unhurt After Dinner Shooting
US President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington after shots were fired near the security area of the Washington Hilton hotel. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and senior officials were reported safe.
Trump Evacuated From Correspondents’ Dinner
The incident took place on Saturday evening during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Security personnel rushed Trump and other senior officials out of the ballroom after gunfire was heard near the event’s screening area.
Guests inside the venue were seen taking cover as Secret Service agents and other security officials moved quickly to secure the President and the room.
Suspect Arrested After Security Breach
Authorities identified the suspect in reports as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from California. Officials said he was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives when he moved through or toward the security checkpoint area.
A Secret Service agent was struck during the attack but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and later reported to be in good condition. Officials said the suspect was taken into custody, while investigators continued examining his motive.
Trump Security Faces Fresh Scrutiny
US officials said Trump and members of his administration were likely targets of the attack, though the investigation was still ongoing. Trump later addressed reporters from the White House and said he believed he may have been the intended target.
The shooting has renewed concerns over political violence and presidential security in the United States. The Washington Hilton also carries historical significance as the site where former President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
