Trump Defends Russian Diesel Deal Amid Backlash

President Donald Trump has defended his decision to temporarily allow Russian diesel imports into the United States, saying he “made the right choice” for American consumers despite criticism from lawmakers, Ukraine and European officials.

Trump Defends Russian Diesel Decision

Trump said the decision was taken in the interests of the American people and argued that additional diesel supplies would help ease domestic fuel prices.

He also accused critics of applying double standards, pointing to the European Union’s large purchases of Russian energy since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump said his priority remained lowering energy costs and protecting US consumers.

Bipartisan Senators Oppose the Deal

A bipartisan group of six US senators, including four Republicans, has urged the administration to reverse the decision.

They argued that importing Russian diesel could provide Moscow with additional revenue while the war in Ukraine continues.

Republican Congressman Michael McCaul also expressed concern, saying that although lower diesel prices are desirable, easing restrictions on Russian energy could weaken pressure on the Kremlin.

Europe and Ukraine Criticise US Move

European officials have also pushed back against Washington’s decision, arguing that stronger sanctions, rather than looser restrictions, are needed.

Ukraine has warned that increased Russian energy revenues could help fund Moscow’s military operations.

The dispute has highlighted growing divisions within the Western alliance over how to balance sanctions on Russia with domestic concerns over fuel prices and energy security.
