Magnitude 6 Earthquake Strikes Panama
A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Panama on October 12, adding to a series of strong aftershocks following a powerful magnitude 7.7 quake that caused widespread damage across central parts of the country.
Magnitude 6 Earthquake Hits Panama
The latest earthquake struck at a depth of about 35 kilometres, according to preliminary seismic data.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or major new damage from the magnitude 6 tremor, but authorities continued monitoring affected areas because the country remains in an active aftershock sequence.
More Than 300 Aftershocks Recorded
Panama has recorded more than 300 aftershocks since the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck on October 9.
That earlier quake caused widespread structural damage across provinces including Los Santos, Coclé, Veraguas and Herrera.
At least 27 people were injured, while nearly 900 homes were reported damaged. Authorities have warned that the figures could rise as assessments continue in remote communities.
National Emergency Remains in Place
The Panamanian government declared a national state of emergency following the October 9 earthquake to accelerate relief and reconstruction efforts.
Damage has been reported to homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure, while emergency teams continue inspections in the worst-affected regions.
Despite the repeated seismic activity, no fatalities have been confirmed from the recent earthquake sequence so far.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for further aftershocks and follow official safety instructions.
