Trump Bars CNN, MS NOW, Politico From White House
US President Donald Trump has announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are banned from the White House, accusing the three news organisations of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news.” Trump said the restriction was effective immediately and warned that other media outlets could face similar action.
Trump Announces White House Media Ban
Trump announced the decision on Truth Social on September 18, saying media organisations should not be allowed to publish what he described as “fiction and lies” about his administration or the United States.
Speaking later at the White House, Trump reiterated that he wanted the outlets barred and suggested the restriction should extend as far as legally possible. He did not identify specific reports that prompted the decision.
Scope of Trump Media Restrictions Unclear
Despite Trump saying the ban was immediately effective, its precise implementation remained unclear. Journalists from the affected organisations were still working from the White House grounds shortly after the announcement, indicating that operational details had not yet been fully enforced.
CNN and Politico said they would defend their constitutional rights to report on the presidency and challenged any attempt to restrict access based on their coverage.
Press Groups Raise First Amendment Concerns
The White House Correspondents’ Association criticised the proposed restrictions, arguing that press freedom protections do not depend on whether a president approves of an organisation’s reporting.
The dispute could trigger legal challenges over White House press access. Previous US court rulings have required procedural protections when access credentials are withdrawn and have limited arbitrary restrictions on journalists using White House press facilities.
