IIT Bombay Student Dies After ChatGPT Exam Incident
A 19-year-old second-year student at IIT Bombay has died by suicide after being found using a mobile phone and ChatGPT during an examination, according to the institute. His death triggered a large student protest on the Powai campus, while authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
IIT Bombay Student Found Using ChatGPT in Exam
The student belonged to the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. IIT Bombay said he was found using a mobile phone during an examination and had uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT to seek answers.
The institute said the matter was subsequently discussed with the student by his course instructor and the Head of Department. According to IIT Bombay, no disciplinary action had been initiated against him over the incident.
Officials said the student was counselled and assured that the examination episode would not adversely affect his academic career.
Institute Says No Disciplinary Action Was Taken
After meeting faculty members, the student returned to his hostel. He was later found dead on Friday evening.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. No official finding has established that the examination incident caused the student’s death, and IIT Bombay has cautioned against drawing conclusions while the inquiry is underway.
IIT Bombay Students Hold Campus Protest
The death prompted more than 400 students to gather in protest on the campus, demanding greater transparency and accountability from the administration.
Students continued their demonstration into the night, while the institute’s Director addressed protesters. Ongoing mid-semester examinations were also postponed following the incident.
IIT Bombay expressed grief over the student’s death and said support was being extended to his friends, classmates, faculty members and others affected by the tragedy.
