TMC Attacks BJP Over Bengal Egg Meal Row

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien has accused the BJP government in West Bengal of trying to impose vegetarianism after reports suggested that eggs could be removed from the State’s midday meal menu for schoolchildren.

Bengal Midday Meal Egg Row

The controversy began after reports claimed that eggs in school midday meals could be replaced with plant-based protein options. O’Brien criticised the reported move, saying it would deprive children of an important source of nutrition.

In a social media post, the TMC leader linked the issue to wider political debates over food habits in Bengal. He alleged that the BJP was attempting to interfere with the State’s dietary culture and said Bengal would reject such a move.

O’Brien’s remarks came after West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta said ISKCON was expected to assist in food preparation and distribution under the midday meal scheme.

The reported change triggered criticism from the Opposition, which argued that eggs are a practical and affordable protein source for schoolchildren. TMC leaders have also framed the issue as part of a broader debate over cultural identity and food choice in Bengal.

ISKCON Denies Final Midday Meal Menu

ISKCON Kolkata Vice President Radharaman Das has clarified that no final menu has been approved. He said a proposed menu circulating online had not been issued by ISKCON and urged people not to share unverified information.

The clarification means there is no official confirmation yet that eggs will be removed from the school meal programme. However, the row has already turned into a political flashpoint between the BJP government and TMC over nutrition, welfare policy and food preferences in West Bengal.
