Tanker Hit By Explosion Off Oman Coast
A Greek-owned crude tanker reported an external explosion off the coast of Oman, prompting a maritime security alert in the Gulf of Oman. Authorities said the vessel and crew were safe, while the cause of the incident remained unknown.
Oman Tanker Explosion Reported
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said the tanker reported an external explosion on its port side near the waterline, around 60 nautical miles off Muscat.
The vessel was identified as Olympic Life, a Greek-owned Very Large Crude Carrier. It was sailing out of the Gulf of Oman when the incident was reported.
Olympic Life Crew Safe
Maritime officials said the crew remained safe after the explosion. The tanker’s technical manager, Springfield Shipping, said the ship was struck by an unidentified object but remained stable and operational.
An initial assessment found damage to one of the vessel’s bunker tanks. A sheen was reported in the water after the incident, but the company said the spill had been contained.
Gulf Of Oman Security Alert
The incident comes at a sensitive time for shipping near the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
Vessel-tracking data showed the Olympic Life was not carrying cargo at the time. The cause of the blast has not yet been established, and maritime authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation.
