Taiwan Says It Is Independent Nation

Taiwan has said it is already an independent nation after US President Donald Trump warned the island against making a formal declaration of independence following his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Taiwan Responds To Trump Warning

Taiwan’s Presidential Office said the Republic of China, Taiwan, is a sovereign and independent country, and that its future can only be decided by its people.

The statement came after Trump said the United States was not looking for Taiwan to declare independence while expecting American backing. He said Washington was not seeking war and suggested that maintaining the current arrangement would help avoid conflict.

Trump Xi Talks Raise Taiwan Issue

Taiwan was one of the most sensitive issues discussed during Trump’s meeting with Xi. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any formal declaration of independence by Taipei.

Xi reportedly warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could damage US-China relations and push the region toward danger. Trump later said there had been no change in America’s Taiwan policy.

Taiwan Says Future Belongs To Its People

Taiwan rejected pressure from Beijing and said China has never governed the island. Taipei also said peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait were important for the global community.

The latest exchange highlights the fragile balance between Washington, Beijing and Taipei. While the United States maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan, it also follows a one-China policy and avoids formally recognising Taiwan as an independent state.
