US-Iran Talks Resume In Switzerland
US envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi were headed to Switzerland for talks aimed at advancing a wider regional agreement, after a ceasefire in Lebanon revived diplomatic efforts linked to the interim US-Iran pact.
US-Iran Switzerland Talks Gain Momentum
The discussions are expected to focus on turning the temporary US-Iran understanding into a more durable regional settlement. The talks come after earlier uncertainty caused by renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
US Vice President JD Vance had earlier cancelled plans to travel to Switzerland amid the escalation. With the ceasefire now in place, diplomatic efforts have resumed, with technical negotiations expected to address unresolved issues under the interim agreement.
Lebanon Ceasefire Revives Regional Diplomacy
Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire after a sharp flare-up in southern Lebanon. The truce is seen as an important condition for broader negotiations, as fighting in Lebanon has remained one of the key obstacles to a lasting regional deal.
Lebanese officials reported Israeli strikes after the ceasefire took effect, though no further strikes were recorded after the first hour. The latest escalation killed dozens in Lebanon, while Israel reported the deaths of four soldiers.
Iran Nuclear Deal And Strait Of Hormuz Focus
The broader agreement includes a 60-day window to resolve disputes related to Iran’s nuclear programme and other regional security concerns. It also seeks to stabilise oil supplies by reopening and normalising movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
The interim pact includes potential sanctions relief, oil export waivers and financial incentives for Iran, while Washington faces political scrutiny over the terms. President Donald Trump defended the agreement, saying Iran had been weakened by the conflict.
