Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalised as Health Deteriorates During Hunger Strike
Education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated during an indefinite hunger strike. Doctors said he was severely dehydrated and physically weak following prolonged fasting and required continuous medical monitoring.
Doctors Warn of Serious Health Risks
Hospital officials said Wangchuk was suffering from dehydration and faced the risk of potentially serious complications. According to doctors, he was refusing treatment despite repeated counselling, prompting the medical team to continue monitoring his condition closely.
Prolonged fasting can lead to electrolyte imbalances, organ damage and other health complications if adequate medical care is not provided.
Shifted to Hospital After Condition Worsened
Delhi Police moved Wangchuk from the protest site to the hospital after medical experts advised urgent intervention. The decision was taken as concerns mounted over the impact of the hunger strike on his health.
His transfer drew criticism from some supporters, while questions were also raised over consent and the circumstances in which he was hospitalised.
Protest Continues Amid Calls for Dialogue
Wangchuk began his hunger strike to press for action over alleged irregularities connected to the NEET examination and broader student concerns. His protest has attracted support from students, civil-society groups and public figures.
Several political and social leaders have urged the government to open talks with Wangchuk and the protestors before the situation deteriorates further.
Authorities, however, have maintained that protecting his life and ensuring medical supervision remain the immediate priorities.
