Russia Names DY Chandrachud as Arbitrator
Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud has been appointed by Russia as its arbitrator in an investment treaty dispute brought by Ukraine’s state-owned Oschadbank. The case concerns assets and banking operations allegedly affected by Russia’s control of territories in Ukraine.
Russia Appoints DY Chandrachud as Arbitrator
Russia selected Justice Chandrachud to represent its side on the three-member arbitral tribunal hearing the investment dispute.
Costa Rican arbitrator and former trade minister Dyalá Jiménez will preside over the tribunal. She was jointly selected as tribunal president by the parties involved in the proceedings.
The appointment marks a significant international arbitration role for Chandrachud following his tenure as Chief Justice of India.
Oschadbank Files Investment Treaty Dispute
Oschadbank initiated the arbitration after reportedly issuing Russia a notice of dispute in July 2025.
The Ukrainian state-owned bank’s claim relates to assets and operations it says were lost or adversely affected in Ukrainian territories impacted by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The proceedings are being pursued as an investment treaty dispute, with the tribunal expected to examine Russia’s obligations and Oschadbank’s claims concerning its investments.
Chandrachud Takes International Arbitration Role
Chandrachud served as Chief Justice of India from November 2022 until his retirement in November 2024.
He had reportedly been approached earlier by Russia to serve as an arbitrator in other international treaty disputes, including cases involving German energy company Wintershall Dea and Ukrainian electricity transmission operator Ukrenergo, but did not take up those assignments.
His latest appointment places the former CJI on a tribunal dealing with a high-profile international dispute arising from the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
