Elon Musk Joins Pentagon Future Warfare Taskforce

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has appointed Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to lead a new Pentagon initiative examining how emerging technologies could reshape future warfare.

Elon Musk Joins Pentagon Project Meridian

The initiative, called Project Meridian, will run for 120 days and is intended to identify the technologies, military capabilities and operational domains the United States may need to dominate future battlefields.

The group will examine areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, autonomous weapons and unconventional combat environments. Its findings are expected to be presented in a public report, with additional classified recommendations for the Pentagon.

Hegseth said the project would draw on expertise from outside the traditional defence establishment to help anticipate how warfare could evolve over the coming decades.

Pentagon Launches Autonomous Warfare Command

The announcement came alongside plans for a new Autonomous Warfare Command focused on accelerating the US military’s deployment of drones, robotics and other autonomous systems.

The proposed four-star command would integrate procurement and operations while allowing military units, engineers and technology companies to develop and test systems more rapidly.

An interim initiative, Project Agincourt, will help prepare the structure while the Pentagon works with Congress on establishing the new command.

Musk and Luckey Bring Defence Industry Experience

Musk’s SpaceX and Luckey’s Anduril already hold significant US defence contracts, giving both executives direct experience with military technology programmes.

Project Meridian is expected to deliver its recommendations by January 28, 2027.

The initiative reflects Washington’s growing focus on AI, autonomous systems and lower-cost battlefield technologies as military competition with China and other major powers intensifies.
