Omar Abdullah to Take Oath as Jammu and Kashmir CM on Wednesday
Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference (NC), is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
This development follows an invitation from Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha, asking him to form and lead the government after the NC-Congress alliance secured victory in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
LG Manoj Sinha’s Invitation
In a formal letter dated October 11, 2024, LG Sinha acknowledged a communication from Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the National Conference, confirming that Omar Abdullah had been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Legislature Party. Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor’s letter referenced support from key political allies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), CPI(M), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and several Independent MLAs, paving the way for Abdullah to form a coalition government.
Coalition Support for Omar Abdullah
The National Conference-Congress alliance received support from prominent figures, including Tariq Hameed Karra, President of JKPCC, G.N. Malik, Secretary of CPI(M), and Pankaj Kumar Gupta, National Secretary of AAP. Additionally, Independent MLAs such as Payare Lal Sharma, Satish Sharma, Ch. Mohd. Akram, and others offered their backing for the formation of the new government.
Oath Ceremony Scheduled
The oath-taking ceremony will be held at SKICC, Srinagar on October 16 at 11:30 a.m., where Omar Abdullah and members of his Council of Ministers will be administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy. LG Sinha, in his letter, expressed best wishes for Abdullah’s tenure, hoping for a highly productive term that serves the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah, sharing his invitation on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the new government.
