Gaza Building Collapse Kills at Least 16
A seven-storey residential building previously damaged during the Gaza war has collapsed in Gaza City, killing at least 16 Palestinians, including five children, and injuring 14 others. Rescue teams were continuing efforts to reach dozens of people believed trapped beneath the rubble.
Gaza Building Collapse Leaves Dozens Trapped
Civil defence officials said at least 10 families had been living inside the damaged building when it collapsed overnight. Nearly 100 people were initially believed to be beneath the debris, with rescuers reporting signs that some survivors could still be alive.
The structure had previously been damaged by an Israeli airstrike but remained occupied because displaced families had limited alternatives for shelter.
Thousands Shelter in War-Damaged Gaza Buildings
Around 2,000 damaged buildings across Gaza are currently being used by Palestinian families seeking accommodation.
Officials estimate that roughly 400 structures are at particular risk of collapse, raising further concerns as winter weather approaches.
Families have continued moving into partially damaged properties because of shortages of tents and other suitable shelter following widespread destruction during the conflict.
Rescue Teams Face Heavy Equipment Shortage
Emergency workers said rescue operations were being hampered by a shortage of heavy machinery needed to remove large concrete sections. Some rescuers and residents were forced to dig through debris manually while searching for survivors.
Palestinian and UN officials say restrictions on machinery entering Gaza have contributed to the shortage, while Israel says controls on certain equipment are intended to prevent its diversion for militant use.
