Omar Abdullah Says Statehood Protest Plan Unchanged
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not changed the National Conference’s plan to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar for the restoration of statehood.
Omar Abdullah statehood protest plan
Omar Abdullah said the National Conference remains committed to its plan to protest in New Delhi at the beginning of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. The protest is aimed at pressing the demand for restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
He said the party would go to Jantar Mantar to remind the Centre of commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah said statehood had been promised in Parliament, before the Supreme Court and at several public platforms.
Jantar Mantar protest for Jammu Kashmir
The National Conference had earlier announced that its ministers, MLAs and MPs would travel to Delhi to raise the statehood demand. The planned demonstration is expected to take place on the first day of the Monsoon Session.
Abdullah said the meeting with the Prime Minister should not be seen as a reason to dilute the protest plan. He maintained that political engagement and public protest could both continue as part of the same demand.
PM Modi meeting and statehood demand
During his meeting with PM Modi, Abdullah discussed several issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir, including early restoration of statehood, the region’s financial position, development and economic growth.
He said he hoped the discussion would benefit the people of Jammu and Kashmir. However, he made it clear that the National Conference would continue to push the Centre publicly and politically until statehood is restored.
