Delhi Population Reaches 2.3 Crore
Delhi’s population has reached around 2.3 crore in the first phase of the Census 2027 exercise, marking a 37.5 percent rise from the 1.7 crore recorded in the 2011 Census.
Delhi population reaches 2.3 crore
The first phase of the Census exercise in Delhi, which concluded on June 14, recorded more than 2.3 crore residents across the National Capital Territory. The figure is based on the initial house-listing and household data collected by enumerators.
The latest count shows a sharp increase in Delhi’s population over the past 15 years. However, the figure remains provisional, as the final population number will be confirmed only after the second phase of population enumeration scheduled for February 2027.
North East Delhi most populated district
North East Delhi has emerged as the most populated district in the capital, with around 28.7 lakh residents. South West Delhi followed with nearly 25 lakh people, while West Delhi and South East Delhi also recorded high population numbers.
New Delhi district recorded the lowest population, with about 2.4 lakh residents. The district-wise figures highlight the uneven population distribution across the capital, with some areas carrying a much heavier demographic burden.
Census 2027 Delhi household data
The first phase covered nearly 76 lakh houses and around 55 lakh households across Delhi. The exercise was carried out through more than 45,000 house-listing blocks.
Officials said the data will help in planning civic services, infrastructure, housing, transport and welfare programmes. The population increase also points to the growing pressure on Delhi’s urban systems, including water supply, roads, schools, hospitals and public transport.
