Myanmar Assures India On Security Concerns
Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar’s territory will not be allowed to be used against India’s security interests. The assurance came during wide-ranging talks in New Delhi focused on border security, trade, defence cooperation, connectivity and regional stability.
India Myanmar Security Cooperation
Prime Minister Modi and President Min Aung Hlaing discussed security challenges along the India-Myanmar border, which remains a major concern due to insurgent activity, refugee movement and instability in Myanmar’s border regions.
India reaffirmed its support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while both sides stressed that their territories should not be misused for activities harmful to each other’s security interests. The talks also covered defence cooperation with a focus on capacity building.
India Myanmar Border And Connectivity Projects
Connectivity was another major area of discussion during the meeting. Both sides agreed to work closely for the completion of key projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.
India sees these projects as important for improving access to the Northeast, expanding trade links and strengthening regional connectivity with Southeast Asia.
PM Modi Discusses Peace Process In Myanmar
Prime Minister Modi also raised the need for lasting peace and inclusion in Myanmar, while underlining the importance of involving all stakeholders in the country’s internal peace process.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said India’s engagement with Myanmar should not be seen as a comment on its internal political arrangements. He said disengagement would create a vacuum that could be filled by other powers, making continued engagement important for India’s strategic and security interests.
