Manipur Demands AFSPA Repeal Amid Escalating Violence

Manipur is witnessing escalating tensions following the recovery of six missing persons’ bodies, with protests spiraling into violence. Demonstrators targeted the homes of ministers and MLAs, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s son-in-law, ransacking properties and setting them ablaze. Protesters also attempted to storm the Chief Minister’s residence, prompting security forces to respond with tear gas.

Curfews and Arrests Amid Arson

A total curfew has been imposed in five districts, including Imphal East and West, as the unrest spreads. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for two days in seven districts. Officials reported arson incidents, including the burning of two churches and several houses in Jiribam town.

Authorities arrested 23 individuals involved in the attacks, recovering a pistol, ammunition, and mobile phones. The homes of three ministers—Sapam Ranjan, L Susindro Singh, and Y Khemchand—were among the properties targeted.

Push for AFSPA Repeal

The state government has requested the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from six police station areas. This follows the Centre’s recent reimposition of AFSPA in violence-hit regions. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), representing Meitei civil society, has demanded military action against militants and the immediate repeal of AFSPA.

Political Reactions

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP government for failing to restore peace in Manipur. Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and take reconciliation measures. Kharge accused the BJP of fostering division and allowing Manipur to burn for political gains.

Security Measures Escalate

The Union Home Ministry has warned of strict action against those inciting violence. Meanwhile, CRPF Director General Aneesh Dayal is heading to the state to assess the situation, and the Mizoram government has advised residents to exercise caution to prevent the spread of unrest to neighboring regions.

The discovery of the missing persons’ bodies, including women and children abducted by militants, has intensified the already volatile situation, further complicating efforts to restore order.
