Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump extended birthday wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he turned 76 on September 17, with the messages arriving amid heightened diplomatic attention over US legislation targeting major buyers of Russian energy.
Putin Praises Modi and India-Russia Partnership
Putin praised Modi’s standing in India and internationally while highlighting his contribution to strengthening the India-Russia “special and privileged strategic partnership”.
He also referred to their recent discussions during his visit to New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, describing the talks as substantive and productive.
The Russian President said he remained committed to continued cooperation with Modi on bilateral and international issues affecting both countries.
Trump Extends Birthday Wishes to Modi
Trump also conveyed birthday greetings through the US Embassy in India, wishing Modi health and happiness for the coming year.
The message came as India-US economic relations face fresh uncertainty following congressional passage of the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.
The US House approved the legislation after the Senate had earlier cleared it, moving the measure closer to becoming law.
US Russia Sanctions Bill Puts India in Focus
The legislation would give Trump discretionary authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major purchasers of Russian oil and gas, potentially affecting India.
The tariffs would not be automatic and would depend on how the US President chooses to use the powers provided under the legislation.
The birthday messages therefore come as India continues balancing its longstanding strategic relationship with Russia alongside its expanding partnership with the United States.
