Climate Change Linked to Nepal-Tibet Floods

A new scientific analysis has found that human-induced climate change likely played a significant role in destabilising the Himalayan slope whose collapse triggered the catastrophic Nepal-Tibet floods on August 26. More than 1,300 people were killed and over 5,000 remain missing after a massive rock-and-ice avalanche swept through communities downstream.

Climate Change Linked to Nepal-Tibet Disaster

Researchers found that the region around Langtang Lirung mountain has warmed by about 2°C since pre-industrial times, while July and August 2026 were the warmest recorded locally.

Temperatures reached as much as 5°C above the 30-year average shortly before the collapse. Scientists said long-term warming has thinned glaciers, increased meltwater and weakened mountain slopes by thawing permafrost.

However, the study stopped short of identifying climate change as the sole cause, describing it instead as an important destabilising factor interacting with local geology.

Massive Rock-Ice Avalanche Triggered Flash Flood

Around 110 million cubic metres of snow, ice and rock plunged approximately 1,400 metres into the valley, generating a destructive flood of water, sediment and debris.

The avalanche swept away settlements, homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure across Nepal and neighbouring Tibet.

Scientists said rock avalanches of this magnitude are extremely rare, but warming conditions are increasing instability across high-altitude mountain environments.

Himalayan Freezing Levels Continue to Rise

The freezing threshold across the Himalayas has risen by roughly 100 metres per decade since the 1980s, exposing previously frozen mountain slopes to longer periods of thawing.

Researchers also noted that Nepal’s powerful 2015 earthquake may have contributed to geological instability, although its precise role in the August disaster remains uncertain.

Nepal has sought financial assistance through the UN loss and damage mechanism following the devastation.
