Lonavala Rain Triggers Pune Landslides
Heavy rainfall in Lonavala triggered multiple landslides across Pune district, disrupting rail traffic on the Mumbai-Pune route and prompting authorities to monitor vulnerable ghat areas closely.
Lonavala Heavy Rainfall Triggers Landslides
Lonavala recorded 670 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 7 am on Monday, July 6, 2026, after an intense monsoon spell battered the hill station and nearby ghat sections.
Officials said Pune district witnessed landslides at 22 locations over the last two days. The heavy rain loosened slopes and increased the risk of boulder falls in several hilly stretches, especially along key transport corridors.
Karjat-Lonavala Ghat Rail Traffic Hit
Rail movement on the Mumbai-Pune line was severely disrupted after landslides were reported in the Karjat-Lonavala ghat section. The route is a crucial rail corridor connecting Mumbai and Pune and frequently faces monsoon-related disruption during extreme rainfall.
Central Railway officials said restoration teams were deployed to clear debris, inspect tracks and ensure safe train movement. Several trains were affected due to safety checks and track clearance work.
Pune Landslides Raise Monsoon Alert
Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila said the ghat section had also received around 300 mm of rainfall on Sunday, adding to the instability of slopes in the region.
The latest disruption has raised concern over landslide-prone zones in the Sahyadri belt. Authorities have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable ghat areas during intense rain spells, while emergency teams and railway staff remain on alert.
