Modi Calls Emergency A Dark Period

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday marked the anniversary of the Emergency, calling the 1975-77 period a dark chapter in which Indian democracy was “brutally crushed” and civil liberties were suspended.

PM Modi Calls Emergency A Dark Period

Referring to the proclamation of Emergency on June 25, 1975, PM Modi said the period was a direct assault on the Constitution. He said citizens’ freedoms were curtailed, press freedom was restricted and several political leaders, journalists and social workers were arrested.

The Prime Minister said the Emergency showed how democratic institutions could be weakened when power was misused. He added that the period remains a reminder of the need to protect constitutional values and democratic rights.

Emergency Anniversary Marked As Samvidhan Hatya Diwas

The government has been observing June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas since 2025. The day is meant to remember what the Centre describes as the suspension of constitutional freedoms during the Emergency.

The Emergency remained in force from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977. It was imposed under Article 352 of the Constitution on the ground of internal disturbance.

Modi Pays Tribute To Democracy Defenders

PM Modi paid tribute to those who resisted the Emergency and defended democratic principles during that period. He said their courage strengthened India’s commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

The Prime Minister said the Constitution represents the aspirations, rights and duties of 140 crore Indians. He urged citizens to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding democratic institutions and constitutional values, saying India must remain committed to the spirit of democracy.
