Karnataka Governor Accepts Siddaramaiah Resignation

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has accepted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation and dissolved the Council of Ministers, formally clearing the way for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to succeed him.

Karnataka Governor Accepts Resignation

Siddaramaiah had submitted his resignation on Thursday after weeks of speculation over a leadership change in the Congress government. The Governor accepted the resignation on Friday and dissolved the Cabinet with immediate effect.

The outgoing Chief Minister had earlier said he was not leaving active politics and had declined a reported Rajya Sabha offer from the Congress high command. He said he wanted to remain in state politics as he had been elected by the people for a five-year term.

DK Shivakumar To Succeed Siddaramaiah

Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar is set to take over as the next Chief Minister. His elevation follows months of political discussion within the party over the power-sharing understanding after the Congress victory in 2023.

Shivakumar has been one of the Congress party’s key organisational leaders in Karnataka and played a major role in the party’s return to power in the state.

Congress Begins Karnataka Transition

The leadership change marks a major political transition in Karnataka, where Siddaramaiah remained one of the Congress party’s strongest mass leaders. The next step will involve the formal process of government formation and Shivakumar’s swearing-in.

The Congress will also have to manage internal equations carefully as the new leadership takes charge of the state government.
