Tim Cook has stepped down as Apple’s chief executive after 15 years at the helm, with longtime hardware chief John Ternus taking over as CEO from September 1, 2026. Cook will remain closely involved with the company as executive chairman of Apple’s board. John Ternus Takes Over as Apple CEO Ternus, previously Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, officially assumes the chief executive role following a succession process approved unanimously by the company’s board. He has spent more than two decades at Apple and has played a major role in developing products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods. Apple Enters New Era With AI Challenge Cook leaves the CEO role after overseeing a dramatic expansion of Apple’s global business, including the growth of services, wearables and its enormous installed base of devices. Ternus now takes charge as Apple faces growing pressure to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence while maintaining momentum across its core hardware businesses. His first major product event as CEO is expected on September 9, when Apple is scheduled to unveil its next generation of iPhones and other products.
