JD Vance Defends Trump Iran Deal
Vice President JD Vance has defended President Donald Trump’s Iran agreement, saying the United States is in a strong position regardless of whether Tehran follows through on the terms of the deal.
Vance Defends Trump Iran Deal
Vance pushed back against Republican criticism that the agreement could give Iran major economic benefits without enough guarantees on its nuclear and military activities. He said the deal was structured so that Iran would receive benefits only if it changed its behaviour over time.
The vice president said Washington had retained leverage because Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure had already been weakened. He argued that the United States would benefit if Iran complied, while still retaining pressure if Tehran failed to meet expectations.
GOP Criticism Over Iran Agreement
Several Republican critics have raised concerns over the memorandum of understanding, particularly a proposed $300 billion reconstruction and economic development fund for Iran. The fund is not expected to be financed by US taxpayers, but critics argue it could still strengthen Tehran if safeguards are weak.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker warned that the deal could undermine US gains and give Iran resources to rebuild its military and nuclear capabilities. Other critics have compared the agreement to the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal.
US Iran Nuclear Talks Continue
Vance rejected those comparisons, saying the new arrangement works differently because economic relief would depend on Iran’s long-term compliance. He also said the administration would focus on enriched uranium stockpiles, inspections and verification to prevent Iran from rebuilding its nuclear programme.
He added that the Strait of Hormuz had reopened to commercial traffic and said millions of barrels of oil had moved through the waterway. Further talks involving Iran, Qatar and Pakistan are expected as the administration seeks a longer-term settlement.
