Jaishankar Criticizes Canada in Australia Over Extremist Activities
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar sharply criticized Canada during a joint press briefing with his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong, in Canberra on Tuesday.
His remarks came in response to recent extremist violence outside the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Ontario, where pro-Khalistan elements disrupted a consular event organized by the Indian Consulate and temple authorities.
“Pattern of Unfounded Allegations,” Jaishankar Says
Addressing Canada’s handling of extremism, Jaishankar noted that the country has allowed “political space” for extremist forces. He also commented on Canada’s recent allegations in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case, labeling them as part of a “pattern of making allegations without providing specifics.”
In addition, Jaishankar raised India’s concerns about the illegal surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, describing it as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that “such actions must be strongly condemned,” and urged a comprehensive review of Canada’s stance on these issues. “Do look at the video,” he advised, pointing to evidence of the support these groups receive.
Australia Voices Concern for Indian Community
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed solidarity with the Indian community, calling the incidents “upsetting” and acknowledging the impact of the Brampton temple attack. “Our local members have expressed strong views, especially given the timing around Diwali,” Wong said, noting the significance of faith and cultural security.
Strong Indian Response to Temple Attack in Canada
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has condemned the attack, urging Canadian authorities to prosecute those responsible. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We condemn the acts of violence perpetrated by extremists and separatists at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton.” Jaiswal called on Canada to ensure the safety of all places of worship, particularly against threats to the Indian community.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted strongly, describing the incident as “cowardly attempts to intimidate” Indian diplomats. Modi urged Canada to ensure justice, emphasizing that such acts “will never weaken India’s resolve.” He added, “We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.”
This diplomatic escalation underscores rising tensions between India and Canada over alleged extremist activities and recent incidents targeting Indian communities in Canada. Jaishankar’s statements in Australia reflect India’s firm stance against such violence and signal expectations for international cooperation in curbing extremist influences.
